Zuckende Strahler, vielkehliger Gesang und ein Frontmann im Tigerkostüm: Wenn die russische Kultband Mumiy Troll ihre Show präsentiert, werden Konzerte zum Spektakel.
Ilya Lagutenko was brought up at the end of the Trans-Siberian railway in Vladivostok. “People there do have this feeling that they live on the edge of the world”. He had his first addictive taste of touring as a child in a proper propaganda-style Soviet choir, singing songs about Lenin in Siberian factories.
“I had romantic dreams about becoming a sailor. The image of them coming back from say Japan in the ‘70s stuck in my head. Hitting the town with their double-breasted jackets and flared jeans, they seemed like Martians.”
But the illicit Western pop those Soviet sailors smuggled back was what enthused the boy Ilya. “I didn’t follow any particular style. Anything you got your hands on was exciting, because it was forbidden fruit.”
This unique genre-blurring inspirational contraband, which would define Lagutenko’s colorful writing, started here. After serving in the Red Navy, he moved to London and flung himself into Camden Town at Brit-pop’s height. It was here that Lagutenko formed his band Mumiy Troll. His first album Morskaya went to number one in Russia.
Now, some 10 albums and 100 million downloads later, his very unique journey continues to spawn some wonderful insights into his world with his songs.
Mumiy Troll have recently played sold out tours in the USA, UK, mainland EUROPE, RUSSIA and the FAR EAST. The band’s 11th album, being recorded with both English and Russian versions (Ilya being fluent in English and Manderin), is currently in production in LA, UK and mainland EUROPE, and being recorded in-between the bands relentless world touring schedule.
